Meet the team

Helen Mason

Director

Helen is a Wheelchair Dance Sport Assosiation Level 2 qualified instructer. She has many years of experience in teaching, choreography and performance. 

​

Helen graduated from Brighton University in 2002 with a B.A (Hons) in Dance and Visual practice, from here she went on to use her interests in both Dance and Art in her role as an Outreach Worker in Birmingham. In 2006 Helen gained her PGCE and worked as a Dance Lecturer at New College Nottingham, a further education college for eight years.

Alongside Freewheelin, Helen is the director of a West Midlands based contemporary company: Squirm. Squirm have performed internationally at events including the opening of the Birmingham Big Weekender 2017.

Francesca Buckland

Assistant

Francesca has been working with Helen to encourage the community to get themselves dancing since Freewheelin was established in January 2017. Francesca has a background in performance, training at Coles Forsyth Dance Academy (previously Sue Cole's School of dance) and working alongside choreographers such as Helen Paler and Nikki O'Hara at venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Sadler's Wells and Milton Keynes Theatre. Francesca is currently a company member of Squirm, a West Midlands based company who have performed internationally.

Francesca graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2015 having read philosophy for three years. She later completed her Postgraduate Diploma in General Primary Education and has been teaching in Birmingham since.

Katie Stevens

Assistant

Katie has been performing since the age of 5 with Simone's School of Dance. She furthered her training at De Montfort University, graduating with a First Class BA Hons. She continued her performance experience with Motionhouse's 'The Voyage' and Birmingham Opera Company's 'Mittwoch Aus Licht' before joining Squrim in 2013 where she performing with since.

Katie joined Freewheelin' in Summer 2018 after helping with promoting the group across Birmingham. She has helped us with our first National Championships competition and is now teaching our private classes.
